The program for this space included a state-of-the-art workstation with an aesthetic that matched an existing commercial office so that continuity could be made between the client’s home office and professional area. Ceilings were maximized to offer a more luxurious experience, and doors were installed that expanded the office into the adjacent multi-use library guest room. In addition, the pocket doors were strategically located to maximize views of the water from the user’s position at the desk, inadvertently increasing daylight in the office.
An anigre custom desktop and maple wood shelving with shadowed reveals and lighting that doubles shelving space as picture displays and space for books. Heights of shelving and depths of cabinetry were explicitly designed for standard book dimensions and the ability to create a flush face but still be able to remove a novel with ease. The recessed shadow line creates a finger pull for the books. Millwork and Drawers were customs intended to work with the ledger-sized paper Will’s friend often dealt with. Wood posts with minimal and clean lines helped support the desktop, and ample computer space was provided. High-end USB grommets were specified with cubies that allow wires to be hidden. A cork backsplash was selected so artwork and pictures could be pinned to the wall and celebrated by the client and family.
Thought was put into an optimal printer location, and cabinetry was maximized above the door. Contemporary maple crown and base molding match and connect the built-ins from wall to wall. Rounded corners and circular desktops prevent users of the space from catching or scratching themselves. Custom glass doors create a place to store particular items and protect them from dust.
Will’s friend selected a mill worker who completed the design without a hitch. Will maintains a working relationship with the cabinet maker as a result.
